EHL and EHLP Teams Start 2-0-1

BURLINGTON, VT -- The 2019-20 season is underway as both Lumberjacks squads opened up play this past weekend at Leddy Arena. The EHL squad cruised to a 7-1 win over the Railers Jr. Hockey Club on Saturday, while the EHLP team fell to the new team from Worcester on Sunday.

The EHL team then made it two wins in a row, with a solid 4-3 victory over the East Coast Wizards yesterday afternoon.

EHL

On Saturday, the EHL squad kicked off their regular season with a convincing win at home against the Railers. Plattsburgh State commit, Corey Doney, scored the first goal of the Lumberjacks young season, giving the boys a 1-0 lead on the power-play at the 1:57 mark of the 1st period.

Egan Schmitt then found the back of the net near the halfway point of the second frame to double the Lumberjacks lead. After the Railers cut the lead back in half, Will Roberts gave Vermont a 3-1 lead with a goal near the end of the frame.

The Lumberjacks put the game away in the third with a total of four unanswered goals to win the first game of the season by a final score of 7-1. Doney, Tyler Lisieski, Jacob Dillon, and Logan Discanio notched the 3rd period tallies, while both Evan Beers and Geordan Buffoline collected a pair of assists in the victory. David Reduzzi earned his first win between the pipes, stopping 22 shots.

The Lumberjacks top team returned to action yesterday afternoon, in search of a little revenge over the East Coast Wizards. For the past two seasons, the Wizards have been the team that's ended each campaign for the Lumberjacks. However, Vermont got the upper hand in this matchup.

After trailing 1-0 at the end of 20 minutes, the Lumberjacks scored four unanswered goals to take a 4-1 lead. The Wizards would claw their way back, but ultimately it was Reduzzi who shut the door with another 20 saves in a 4-3 victory. Zachary Booth and Austin Marini each had a goal and an assist in the contest, all while eight total players registered at least a point in the box score.

EHLP

On Sunday, the EHLP team also hosted the Railers to start their 2019-20 campaign. After trailing 1-0, Frank Mondi put the Lumberjacks on the board with a goal at the 3:20 mark of the 2nd period. The Railers answered back with a pair of power-play goals in the 3rd to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Lumeberjacks came right back as Aaron Damren notched a power-play goal of his own to trim the lead down to one. With just 1:53 remaining in the game, Mondi found the back of the net for the second time to knot the game up at three goals apiece, and send the two teams to overtime.

Unfortunately, the Railers scored on a breakaway in overtime. to take the extra point in the standings. Cam Isabelle was busy in net, stopping 30 shots in the overtime loss.
