BURLINGTON, VT -- Both Lumberjacks squads were back in action this past week as the EHL team beat the Walpole Express on Saturday and then went 1-1-0 in the first showcase of the 2019-2020 campaign. After another strong week, the EHL boys remain in first place in the conference with a 5-1-1 record. The EHLP team has also jumped into first place in their conference with 10 points after going 2-1-0 over the weekend.
On Saturday, both the EHL and EHLP teams traveled down to Walpole for a long weekend of games. The EHL squad faced-off against the Express for the first of four matchups against their conference opponent this season. Dan Barry got the Lumberjacks on the board first with a power play goal around the halfway point of the first period. Barry added another goal in the second frame, followed by a Jacob Dillion tally just 53 seconds after to give the squad a 3-0 advantage. Both Egan Schmitt and Cory Doney added two more power play goals in the third and the Lumberjacks cruised to a 5-2 win. David Reduzzi stopped 26 shots for his 3rd win of the young season.
On day #1 of the showcase, the Lumberjacks squared off against the first place Philadelphia Revolution. Austin Marini scored the first goal of the game to give the Lumberjacks the lead, but the Revolution answered quickly near the end of the half to knot things up at 1 goal a piece. The scoring opened up in the second half as Geordan Buffoline notched a pair of goals. However, The Revolution found the back of the net 5 times and won the game by a final score of 6-3. Connor Carbo was busy in net, stopping 25 shots in the loss.
On day #2 of the showcase, the Lumberjacks faced-off against Team Maryland for the first and only time this season. It didn't take long for things to get going as Logan Discanio gave the Lumberjacks the lead just 17 seconds into the contest. Jensen Dodge followed suit with a goal a few minutes later to give the boys a 2 goal advantage. Maryland cut the lead in half later on in the frame, but Schmitt added another goal early on in the second half to help lead the Lumberjacks to the 3-1 win. Dillon Whalen stopped 21 shots in the winning effort for his 1st win of the season.
On Saturday, the EHLP squad started up a three game series against the Walpole Express and it got off to a hot start. Nick Speckhart, Logan Aprea, and Evan Parent all found the back of the net early on in the first period to give the Lumberjacks a commanding 3-0 lead right away. The Express got a goal back near the end of the frame but, recently named EHLP Forward of the Week, Brandon Clark, made it a 4-1 game with a power play goal in the opening minutes of the second period. The Express continued to battle back, scoring a pair of goals of their own in the frame, to cut the lead back down to 4-3. However, both Speckhart and Clark added third period insurance goals to put the game out of reach. Alex Herman stopped 28 shots in the 6-4 win.
In the second game of the series, Riley McBride, put the Lumberjacks ahead first with a goal just 19 seconds into the second half. However, the Express scored twice after that and held on for a 2-1 win. Herman was solid between the pipes in the loss, stopping 20 shots.
In the rubber match on Monday, Colby Anton gave the Lumberjacks the lead around 3 minutes into the second half. The Express tied the game up a few minutes later but Speckhart gave the squad back the lead with his 3rd goal of the weekend. The back and forth action ensued as the Express got a goal back, but with just 1:08 left remaining on the clock, McBride, notched the game winning goal, leading the Lumberjacks to a 3-2 win. Clark collected an assist on each of the third period goals and Sam Fath stopped 25 shots in net for his 2nd win of the season.
